Although Hong Kong was officially returned to China by the United Kingdom in 1997, the argument for Hong Kong democracy, even independence, has never stopped.
Just recently in 2019, mass protests have been going on for several months, causing huge loss and leading to further controversies. The current situation does not appear to be beneficial for either mainland China or Hong Kong. So, what is the cause of the urgent call for democracy in Hong Kong? What would be the advantages and disadvantages of having democracy? Neither of the two sides is willing to compromise, but both have taken actions to either repress or rise up.

Captain George Kendell, a convicted spanish spy, was the first recorded execution in the New World in 1608. Britain first introduced the idea of capital punishment when it colonized the New World, which later became the United States.
Today, the most severe punishment in the American judicial system for a crime is capital punishment or the death penalty. At its inception, a person could be put to death for treason; however, today, a person can now only be sentenced to death for taking someone else’s life. Throughout the existance of the death penalty, it has been banned and unbanned due to the many controversies that have followed it.

For many years, there has been an ongoing debate over the use of Native American mascots for sports teams in America. While some may view the debate as an impractical argument based on political bias, many consider it to be a fight to preserve the cultural rights of Native Americans.
" Extensive national surveys assessing public opinion about the Native American mascotting debate present statistics revealing that the majority of American citizens champion the notion to ban prospective Native American mascots. Dehumanizing mascots cut away at the cultural identity of Native Americans and force them into a new identity defined by American popular culture, often making them an object of the past and separating them from the rest of society.

One explanation for the correlation between heightened creativity and mental illnesses such as Bipolar Depression may lie in the frequency of visual artists that suffer from bipolar depression. My research explores different approaches that psychologists have used to explain the relationship between Bipolar Depression and heightened creativity as well as examples of individuals who’s art has been heavily influenced by their mental illnesses.

As drowning kills around 1,000 kids in America each year, most would agree that teaching small children how to swim is necessary before they are exposed to pools all summer.
Parents dream of having their children sufficiently swimming at the youngest age possible, yet "self-rescue" swim classes are condemned by some as traumatic events. “Self-rescue" classes are a controversial form of swim lessons due to their perceived negative effects and the lack of medical research surrounding them. While no swimming instruction can “drown-proof” a child or infant, these lessons when taught correctly should be considered safe and life saving.

Single sex schools are becoming more and more popular all around the United States. Much evidence has proven that same-sex schools are more effective than co-ed schools because they better promote academic achievement, confidence, and character in their student bodies.
In the mathematical area, girls efficiency of the subject went from 16% to 42% while attending a single sex educational class. In literature, males’ efficiency of the subject went from 16.5% to 31.3% in a single sex educational class. This is a result of less social pressure on the individual, better self-confidence, and more focus on educational achievement, thus, resulting in a more successful lifestyle. Single sex schools benefit every different stereotypical student in the educational system.

The average American worker spends over two and a half hours a week dealing with conflict. That equates to $359 billion in lost money for American companies (Winfrey).
The main cause of this wasted time and money is miscommunication, particularly between workers of different generations. Due to being raised in different time periods and in different cultures, each generation communicates and views the world dissimilarly, but none of the generations understand this about each other, leading to the miscommunication that plagues American workplaces. However, this cycle of misunderstanding and miscommunication can be stopped by educating the next generation coming into the workplace: Generation Z.

Interacting with other people is a basic necessity of life because it is how humans form relationships and understand those around them; although it is common for people to rely on the usage of their words when communicating, body language and gestures are an alternative way in which people can fully understand each other.
"There are many different forms of non-verbal communication and also many different functions that each use implies. Non-verbal communication is not something the human mind generally comprehends simply because it has naturally adapted to this subconscious way of communicating; however, it is the primary way in which people understand the relationships they have with each other.

However, robots with the same intelligence as humans is new, unknown, and potentially dangerous territory. Humans must find a proper way to interact with new, developing A.I.s in order to have a society that can live peacefully with advanced, human-like A.I.

The Hippocratic Oath, one of the oldest binding documents in history, an oath containing the fundamental duties and responsibilities of a person in medicine, is substantially used today.
It has become the backbone and core foundation of what it means to be in a position of healthcare. The purpose of the Hippocratic Oath is to guide doctors, physicians, and nurses to treat and care for patients with the best care possible. Unfortunately, these are not the sole intentions of modern-day doctors and physicians. Big corporations and business gain complete control over hospitals with the aim to make a profit, and as a result, hospitals are becoming more corporatized. The monopolization of healthcare is the effect of the abandonment of the core values of medicine, the attraction of medicine's monetary benefits, and the increase of the cost of insurance.

The existence of a “memory” is not concrete, as memories are constructed by the human brain piecing together various bits of information to form a coherent idea, and these memories are frequently influenced by one’s own interpretation of events as well as input from others.
"In fact, it has been proposed that memories overall are “hopelessly fragile and impossibly inaccurate,” raising questions about the reliability of human brains to remember anything completely correctly, yet, for the most part, memories seem to serve people fairly well, allowing them to function properly for themselves and in society (Bethune). Therefore, the idea that all memories are either entirely fact or entirely fiction is too facile a proposition, as each individual memory is developed by various factors that affect its overall verity. However, an understanding has arisen among scientists and researchers that entirely false “memories” do exist, and are capable of posing serious threats to not only individuals’ mental health and general wellbeing, but also to the justice system at large. Yet, there is potential for the positive use of technology in implanting false memories in the future.

Through the analysis of popular movements such as ee-ja-nai-ka and associated primary sources, including manifestos and songs, my research attempts to argue that these socio-political interactions influenced the course of the Meiji Restoration, as well as the birth of a new nationalism under a new regime.
