Although Hong Kong was officially returned to China by the United Kingdom in 1997, the argument for Hong Kong democracy, even independence, has never stopped.
Just recently in 2019, mass protests have been going on for several months, causing huge loss and leading to further controversies. The current situation does not appear to be beneficial for either mainland China or Hong Kong. So, what is the cause of the urgent call for democracy in Hong Kong? What would be the advantages and disadvantages of having democracy? Neither of the two sides is willing to compromise, but both have taken actions to either repress or rise up.

Captain George Kendell, a convicted spanish spy, was the first recorded execution in the New World in 1608. Britain first introduced the idea of capital punishment when it colonized the New World, which later became the United States.
Today, the most severe punishment in the American judicial system for a crime is capital punishment or the death penalty. At its inception, a person could be put to death for treason; however, today, a person can now only be sentenced to death for taking someone else’s life. Throughout the existance of the death penalty, it has been banned and unbanned due to the many controversies that have followed it.

For many years, there has been an ongoing debate over the use of Native American mascots for sports teams in America. While some may view the debate as an impractical argument based on political bias, many consider it to be a fight to preserve the cultural rights of Native Americans.
" Extensive national surveys assessing public opinion about the Native American mascotting debate present statistics revealing that the majority of American citizens champion the notion to ban prospective Native American mascots. Dehumanizing mascots cut away at the cultural identity of Native Americans and force them into a new identity defined by American popular culture, often making them an object of the past and separating them from the rest of society.
"The relationship between heightened creativity and mental illness is highly disputed as research on the topic is varied and seeks to explain the correlation between the two in different ways thus making it hard to draw a concrete conclusion.
One explanation for the correlation between heightened creativity and mental illnesses such as Bipolar Depression may lie in the frequency of visual artists that suffer from bipolar depression. My research explores different approaches that psychologists have used to explain the relationship between Bipolar Depression and heightened creativity as well as examples of individuals who’s art has been heavily influenced by their mental illnesses.

Parents dream of having their children sufficiently swimming at the youngest age possible, yet "self-rescue" swim classes are condemned by some as traumatic events. “Self-rescue" classes are a controversial form of swim lessons due to their perceived negative effects and the lack of medical research surrounding them. While no swimming instruction can “drown-proof” a child or infant, these lessons when taught correctly should be considered safe and life saving.
Single sex schools are becoming more and more popular all around the United States. Much evidence has proven that same-sex schools are more effective than co-ed schools because they better promote academic achievement, confidence, and character in their student bodies.
In the mathematical area, girls efficiency of the subject went from 16% to 42% while attending a single sex educational class. In literature, males’ efficiency of the subject went from 16.5% to 31.3% in a single sex educational class. This is a result of less social pressure on the individual, better self-confidence, and more focus on educational achievement, thus, resulting in a more successful lifestyle. Single sex schools benefit every different stereotypical student in the educational system.
The Knights Templar has been recently featured in popular culture with movies and video games portraying the order as a secret society possessing Christian relics with immense power, such as the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail.
This presentation will explore the true story of the Knights Templar with their founding in 1119 to protect pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land along with their fall. The fall of the popular order was marked by political struggles for power in Europe and accusations of sinful acts committed by the Templars. This led to the arrest of many Templars and the dissolution of the Order in 1312.
The main cause of this wasted time and money is miscommunication, particularly between workers of different generations. Due to being raised in different time periods and in different cultures, each generation communicates and views the world dissimilarly, but none of the generations understand this about each other, leading to the miscommunication that plagues American workplaces. However, this cycle of misunderstanding and miscommunication can be stopped by educating the next generation coming into the workplace: Generation Z.
When listening to music, especially songs that were popular 10-20 years ago, one begins to have memories of where they were, who they were with, what they were doing when that beat or melody comes on. It may remind someone of fun times or sad times. Songs are therapeutic; they help one get through when nothing else can. Also, a song can trigger that specific memory Music has a powerful effect on the brain, and how the human body reacts when music is being played.
Music has evolved in the past couple of decades, and the genres of music have gotten even more significant with what they mean and how the artists try to reach the listener. All these artists try and put out the same message whether it is rhythm, blues, hip-hop, etc…..., aArtists give the listener something to relate to. Whether that is something sad that has happened in their life, a happy feeling, or even just a calm and relaxing one, music is powerful.
Interacting with other people is a basic necessity of life because it is how humans form relationships and understand those around them; although it is common for people to rely on the usage of their words when communicating, body language and gestures are an alternative way in which people can fully understand each other.
"There are many different forms of non-verbal communication and also many different functions that each use implies. Non-verbal communication is not something the human mind generally comprehends simply because it has naturally adapted to this subconscious way of communicating; however, it is the primary way in which people understand the relationships they have with each other.
At the beginning of the agricultural revolution, humans did not have the necessary technology to utilize fish to grow food, instead of river or ocean water, the plants with the advancement of farming.
Since then, technology and science have cultivated aquaponic systems to expedite and produce organic vegetables for cheaper values. A wide variety of foods can be produced alongside the many different fish species to create healthy vegetables. Expenses to keep a stable greenhouse may vary depending on fish species and vegetables in an ecosystem that each organism can survive in.
Flags have evolved from being simple status symbols to being emblems of
cultures and nations. One thing has remained constant about flags: flags are a representation of
identity. Ranging from Roman battle standards to modern nation banners; flags have evolved to
portray the idea of distinction and to this day are an important role in society. Flags are an
important part of society because they allow for the expression of people and their cultural
The idea of robots has fascinated humans in all sorts of ways. Be it simple machines that can effortlessly mass produce items or sophisticated Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) . that can think and interact on par with humans, we have entertained the idea of life with robots for as long as the concept of robots as existed.
However, robots with the same intelligence as humans is new, unknown, and potentially dangerous territory. Humans must find a proper way to interact with new, developing A.I.s in order to have a society that can live peacefully with advanced, human-like A.I.
Currently, global human history is witnessing the watershed moment of the Third Industrial Revolution, or as scholars would call it, the emergence of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, or Industry 4.0, which promises to bring about some of the most significant changes in human history. In order to understand the upcoming industrial revolution better, previous revolutions must be looked at.

It has become the backbone and core foundation of what it means to be in a position of healthcare. The purpose of the Hippocratic Oath is to guide doctors, physicians, and nurses to treat and care for patients with the best care possible. Unfortunately, these are not the sole intentions of modern-day doctors and physicians. Big corporations and business gain complete control over hospitals with the aim to make a profit, and as a result, hospitals are becoming more corporatized. The monopolization of healthcare is the effect of the abandonment of the core values of medicine, the attraction of medicine's monetary benefits, and the increase of the cost of insurance.

C.S. Lewis is a Christian whose name will go down as one of the most creative authors of our time. Though many might not know him, he has still had a strong impact on millions of people who have read his books and taken something from it. Lewis’ background points us to why he wrote these books and why he is such a prominent writer during his time. His writing serves to personally connect us with him and his beliefs. Lewis’s creativity is unique and illuminates the world from his perspective. Although he is a Christian author, his books differ from other famous Christian writers such as John Bunyan, Jonathan Edwards, and Oswald Chambers. Lewis writes in a different style than most of these authors to help us understand Christianity through his eyes. C.S Lewis’s imaginative works contrast with conventional Christian works in order to encourage readers to perceive Christianity from an original perspective.
Modern sedentary lifestyle and obesity have become a major health concern. In addition to the lack of physical activities, people’s eating behaviors are also considered to be a cause of obesity because bad food choices can cause detrimental impacts physically and psychologically.
"To prevent obesity and other health risks associated with being overweight, a variety of weight loss products and diet plans have been developed, including the Atkins Diet, ketogenic diet, and intermittent fasting. Unfortunately, various diets such as the Atkins Diet and Ketogenic diet have significant setbacks; however, intermittent fasting has been gaining popularity in recent years, as it is known to produce other health benefits besides weight loss, such as promoting a healthy immune system, boosting mental clarity, enhancing physical performance, and preventing aging.
As the LGBT+ community has evolved and adapted over time, so have the people who are against them. Due to this development, homophobia has saturated itself throughout politics, education, entertainment, corporations, and, most dangerously, everyday life. My project will delve into the basic aspects of the LGBT+ community, the history of the LGBT+ rights movement in America, how homophobia has impacted society and where it can typically be found, and the measures we can take in order to make America more accepting.
"The world is doomed. The time of utter destruction is nye. However, I carry the key to salvation. In order to save the world, we must fix the negative effects of radiocarbon dating in the archaeological world.
I know what you're thinking. Can we rely on alternatives, like thermoluminescence, dendrochronology, thorium ratios, and many others? Or can we just ameliorate the errors that already exist in radiocarbon dating to make it better? I'm picking up what you're putting down, and I have to confess, those are excellent questions! If you come to my Senior Symposium presentation, you can find out the answers to your questions and have a little fun too! (I promise it will be fun; it's not boring I swear)
"My topic is based off a true event and I think it’s really interesting. If you have an interest in mysteries, things like Criminal Minds, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy, etc. my presentation would be a good one to go to.
I personally love the topic because it’s quite interesting how these events led to so much people stepping in and trying to help a crazy woman. If you know things about personality disorders and want to learn more come to my presentation because it’s talked about it a number of areas. In conclusion, come to my presentation because it’s going to be great.
In addition, I address the rise in illegal fentanyl being pushed into the states from foreign areas. My research focuses on how one of most dangerous drugs was distributed throughout the country and how the possibility of this occurring again are on the rise.
Most athletes work on their body to make it stronger by going to the gym and eating healthy; some athletes do not want to put in the work and to get better and take the cheater's way out. PED is not acceptable and should not be around in sports.
Research shows that performance-enhancing drugs should remain prohibited to all sports. Reasons include the adverse effects performance-enhancing drugs may have on the athlete's body. Realistically, athletes and sporting events display talent and competitiveness, and athletes feel no advantage when an athlete is using PED.
Tony Garrett Mitchell, Wayne Williams, Samuel Little, and Lonell David Franklin Jr., are all infamous serial killers that are not often heard about. Tony Garrett Mitchell, a notorious serial killer from Columbia, Tennessee, was an evil genius and was one who killed women for the fame of his actions. Mitchell was also one of my stepdads’ best friends throughout highschool. African American serial killers are not commonly heard about.
Attending college is a monumental and exciting time for young adults. A time full of change and new experiences, attending a university is the first step in discovering oneself; however, this pivotal time in a young adult’s life can all too easily be altered for the worse due to the sexual assault crisis America is facing today.
"College campuses are facing a sexual assault crisis as a 1 in 4 women are experiencing some form of sexual assault during their undergraduate years. Each victim faces emotional and possibly physical repercussions, leading to a devastating effect on their wellbeing. Because of the catastrophic impact on victims’ lives after an assault of this nature, universities must condemn these behaviors by adopting no tolerance policies for sexual assaults, while also educating incoming students on what they should be aware of and how they should protect themselves.
The Met Gala was created in 1948 in order to raise money for a costume exhibit by Eleanor Lambert and has since emerged as the industry’s most prominent showcase for haute couture fashion due to its celebrity attendees and innovative designs; however, in most recent years the Met Gala has transformed into more of a social event rather than supporting the Costume Institute itself.
Vogue host the annual gala every May to raise money for the Institute, however; the question is why does the public only see the fancy clothes that the celebrities wear and the red carpet interviews but not the Institute itself?
The existence of a “memory” is not concrete, as memories are constructed by the human brain piecing together various bits of information to form a coherent idea, and these memories are frequently influenced by one’s own interpretation of events as well as input from others.
"In fact, it has been proposed that memories overall are “hopelessly fragile and impossibly inaccurate,” raising questions about the reliability of human brains to remember anything completely correctly, yet, for the most part, memories seem to serve people fairly well, allowing them to function properly for themselves and in society (Bethune). Therefore, the idea that all memories are either entirely fact or entirely fiction is too facile a proposition, as each individual memory is developed by various factors that affect its overall verity. However, an understanding has arisen among scientists and researchers that entirely false “memories” do exist, and are capable of posing serious threats to not only individuals’ mental health and general wellbeing, but also to the justice system at large. Yet, there is potential for the positive use of technology in implanting false memories in the future.
Are there any scientific reasons behind how and why people attract each other? When people first meet each other, appearance is an important factor of attraction. As time passes, body reactions and physical proximity can be determined whether a relationship is going to continue. Also, the research has covered different techniques that are used in online dating since it has become a trend of the human attraction in modern days.
In the era we live in today, it is becoming more and more important to pay attention to Mother Nature, in particular as time progresses. The world is experiencing many issues and those affecting climate are a major concern for various reasons. Although she can produce magnificent scenery, Mother Nature can simultaneously demonstrate her fury. Hurricanes are one such example.
Unfortunately, the increasing temperatures of the planet are having serious effects on the weather. One particular region of the world that is experiencing the negative and potentially severe consequences of global warming is the Caribbean.
"They develop as a result of both genetic and societal influences and have many long term mental and physical effects aside from losing weight. The most common types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Because there is a stigma surrounding the “normal” sufferers of eating disorders, many groups are overlooked as possible sufferers. Eating Disorders are a national epidemic that are heavily influenced by social media and should be treated as a national health crisis. It is imperative that those suffering from eating disorders and negative relationships with food seek treatment.
Climate change is one of the biggest threats our modern world faces today. Summers are hitting record high temperatures, winters are hitting record lows, our ice caps are melting, and unusual weather patterns are starting to become a weekly occurrence.
The most concerning of these being hurricanes. Hurricanes are one of the most destructive natural forces on earth, and have risen in average intensity by nearly 15% in the past decade. Could we expect longer, larger, and potentially more dangerous hurricanes in the future? Possibly some that can wipeout an entire island off the face of the earth ? Come to my presentation to find out how these brutal storms work and what we could expect to see in the future if our earth continues this downward climatic trend.
"While every instrument shares this same formula of sounds and science, the flute is distinct from other instruments because combined it has both simplicity and complexity. Its historical significance is as the first of any created instruments throughout civilizations. This scientific and historical magic of the flute continues to this day.
In the past few decades, the production of biofuels created from corn or sugar canes has increased; however, they haven’t been as efficient as fossil fuels or other unexplored alternatives. More recently, algae has been proven to be more productive and efficient than land crops at creating a successful biofuel through different methods like algae farms or coupling algae cultivation with wastewater treatment to potentially replace fossil fuels.
My research confirms these general trends, but gives a more nuanced view of the complex interactions between seemingly separate political and social dynamics. Through the analysis of popular movements such as ee-ja-nai-ka and associated primary sources, including manifestos and songs, my research attempts to argue that these socio-political interactions influenced the course of the Meiji Restoration, as well as the birth of a new nationalism under a new regime. I'll compare the movement to the French Revolution and extend the analysis to revolutions in general.
